Night routine 8/30/18: Newness in this routine! @banilaco_official Clean It Zero Revitalizing. Smells like candy!! I bought it from @stylekorean_official. Sootera Alpha Peel (pH 3.5) left on for 3 minutes followed by their Neutralizer (pH 7). I rinsed this off 1 minute later. Lower cheeks felt slightly numb for a few seconds but my skin looked pretty smooth after this! There was a slight tingle but no discomfort after applying the peel. Happy pink Wednesday! lol. I may participate more often in these theme days because they're pretty fun. Here are some of my daily favorites that just happen to be pink! _____ Onomie Bright Concealing Elixir*- I mix two shades, Germain and Shikibu, and use them to cover up the melasma spots on my upper cheekbones. The coverage is medium to heavy, but not thick or cakey. It's actually really smooth and has good staying power Onomie Boosting Lip+Cheek Stick in Caria*- this is one of their newest shades and is a pretty beige-toned pink. I'm not sure if it's just the one I got, but this feels much more creamy than their other shades. I can't get enough of cream blushes and this is the one I've loved using the most these days Onomie AHA! Perfecting Setting Powder*- I like using this finely milled setting powder on my oily areas. It keeps the shine down for several hours, but doesn't look powdery Glossier You Solid Perfume- This is very concentrated and once I accidentally I used too much and ended up with a headache. tiny swipe on the wrists and neck is just right for me Glossier Stretch Concealer- I use the Light shade for under my eyes. It looks like skin and doesn't crease or cake up, but the lack of staying power is a bummer. I'd love it if they released a long wear version Glossier Balm Dotcom- It's basically fancy Aquaphor, but I love it anyway, lol. My favorites are the original and coconut Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm- I recently went through a phase where I only wanted to use unscented products. My nose gets overwhelmed sometimes, but I'm such a moar is moar person, that I sometimes end up using multiple scented things! This hand balm smells like a spa, but was one of the few scented products I still kept using because it's a very centering scent. A celebration of both Halloween and Guy Fawkes crowds of people come to watch the display with the historic castle, one of the finest 12th Century castles in the England, as the backdrop. It is regarded as one of the top displays in the country. This year they will have both a dragon and a wizard on hand to meet the children!

Saturday 28th October. Gates open at 5PM with the display starting at 7.15PM.

 

 

2. York Maze North Yorkshire

 

For an amazing bonfire night to remember, remember in York the home of Guy Fawkes, head to The York Maze Fireworks Spectacular. Held on 5th November there will be fire shows, the explosive lighting of York's biggest bonfire, food stalls, live music, sideshows and the most amazing fireworks show choreographed to music.

3. Cambridge’s Bonfire Night takes place on Midsummer Common

4. London’s Alexandra Palace firework festival

 

The Alexandra Palace Fireworks Festival is easily one of the biggest displays in town. In fact this year it's happening TWICE. As well as impressive fireworks exploding with a glittering panoramic view of London as its backdrop, tickets include a huge fire parade with burning floats, street food and an Oktoberfest style craft beer village.

5. Leeds Castle, Kent 

 

One of the most beautiful places to celebrate Guy Fawkes, this year’s theme is ‘Best of British’ and is set to have over 25,000 starbursts filling the sky. Those wanting to attend the display, can arrive from 2pm onwards to enjoy live music, entertainment, falconry display, maze and play areas and variety of delicious food options. This fantastic bonfire night sells out out every year so buy tickets before you go.

6. Sparks in the Park, Cardiff

 

Wales’ biggest and best firework display, now in its 30th year. Taking place at Coopers Field beside the exquisite Cardiff Castle this is set to be an event to remember for both children and adults. This is now a ticketed event (with proceeds going to charity) due to its huge popularity.

Saturday 4th November. Gates open at 4.30 with childrens display at 5.30 followed by the main fireworks at 7pm


 

 

7. Fireworks at the Fort, Segedunum, Tyne and Wear

 

Bring your oohs and aahs to fireworks at the fort and see the night sky over the River Tyne light up. The ancient ruins and the iconic spot provide a stunning backdrop to what will be a dazzling display of fireworks. This is a free event!

8. Lewes Bonfire Night Celebrations, East Sussex

 

Six local bonfire societies are joined by about 30 visiting groups and dozens of marching bands, each with their own parades, traditions and costumes, culminating with huge bonfires on the hills around town and spectacular firework displays. Seventeen burning crosses are carried through the streets to commemorate the 17 martyrs burned at the stake in the town in the 16th century. Lewes's medieval cobbled streets get extremely crowded and chaotic, so it isn't suitable for young children The Daily Telegraph has described the night as "a head-on collision of Halloween and Mardi Gras".

What better way to spend this bank holiday weekend than by hosting (or attending!) a BBQ while its still summer? We’ve put together our guide to make your summer BBQ a sizzling success… And some outfit picks to match!

 

Here’s our step by step guide and top tips!

 

1 -  Number of guests – how many people are coming dictates what quantity of food to buy.

2 -  Ingredients – always get extra just in case! If you end up with leftovers, then all the better for the host!

3 -  Prepare ahead – many salad dressings, BBQ marinades and food prep can be done ahead of the date. The less you leave till the day of the BBQ, the more time you’ll have to socialise and spend time with your guests.

4 - Pick an outfit – we've selected some pieces from our collection to inspire your look. 

5 - Enjoy!

 

Show stopper salads... 

 

 

Something to add colour to the tables and wow even the strongest of sworn meat lovers. Griddle sweet potato slices and dress with a roughly blended mixture of olive oil, chilli and (smoked) garlic to taste. Garnish with mint for the perfect finish.

 

 

 Dazzling main dishes...

 

 

 

While BBQ’s can often be associated with piles of chargrilled burgers and sausages (and don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that!) why not add some variety? Salmon on the BBQ works extremely well, and is deceptively simple. Glaze in honey, soy sauce and wasabi and watch your guests be amazed.

 

 

Delicious dips... 

 

 

A BBQ wouldn’t quite be the same without a dip. Despite the shop shelves being filled with choice, nothing beats a home-made hummus or ketchup, and it always impresses the guests!

Our pick was based on Satorini’s potential for a well-rounded island getaway combined with a notable Greek inspired cuisine.  Santorini’s volcanic soil cultivates a varied array of wonderful fruit and vegetables that are grown with very little water including the island's famous fava, white eggplants, large cucumbers, capers, and, especially, cherry tomatoes. Lovers of seafood are also in luck, and visitors here can enjoy many a romantic, dimly lit restaurant overlooking the sea.

The beach-goer - Naxos

Total peace and serenity can be hard to find on some islands in high season, but Naxos boasts the longest beaches in the Cyclades: perfect for days of swimming and sunbathing. The sand derives from marble or granite, making it smooth as well as uncharacteristically luminous for Greece.

The explorer - Crete

Head to the west of Crete for adventures and hiking over a variety of terrains and unspoilt landscapes. The most famous is the ambitious 10 mile Samaria gorge which is renowned as one of the most beautiful trails in Europe. Besides this there are a variety of other trails to suit fitness levels and travel itineraries. The Richtis Gorge, for example, takes a day and passes through a lush green oasis which allows for a swim at the Richtis fall. Those ready for a serious challenge can look forward to climbing to the peak of Crete, Timios Stavros, at an altitude of 2546m.

We’ve picked some outfits inspired by our favourite cocktails so you'll know exactly what to wear to that next drinks date!

The espresso martini

  Sweet with a caffeine kick and, when made well, the alcohol is barely noticeable. A perfect early-evening choice. A perfect early-evening choice.  This classic was born and bred in Soho in the 80s and remains a firm choice with little need for variation.

 

Recipe:

50ml vodka (we recommend Ketel One)

35ml Kahlúa (coffee liquer)

25ml espresso shot

A dash of vanilla gomme syrup (optional for taste)

Method:

Shake all ingredients well with ice before straining into a chilled martini glass. (Chilling the glass keeps your cocktails at optimum temperature for longer).

What to wear...

 

 

 Aperol spritz

  Popular with Italians, this is a wine based cocktail seen on many a sunny Venetian terrace. With a great scope for variation, the Aperol spritz is an aperitif which can be tailored to your particular tastes.

Making this is as easy as 3, 2, 1: three parts prosecco or white wine, two parts aperol, one part soda. We recommend this recipe:

 

50ml Aperol

75ml Prosecco or dry white wine

A splash of soda

(25ml gin, entirely optional!)

Slice of orange

  Method:

Simply fill a large balloon wine glass with ice allow the glass to chill while you prepare your other ingredients. Pour the ingredients over the ice cubes starting with the Aperol and finishing with the dash of soda.

 The Kir Royale

A French cocktail combining dry champagne poured over crème de cassis (an upgrade on the traditional Kir which simply uses white wine). A fruity summer twist for champagne lovers which remains another popular summer aperitif after its rise to popularity following World War II. Swap crème de cassis for a good quality raspberry liqueur like Chambord depending on your tastes.

  

Recipe:

2-3 teaspoons crème de cassis (according to taste)

Your favourite dry champagne

Method:

Let the crème de cassis settle at the bottom of a chilled champagne flute glass. Pour the champagne gradually over an upside down teaspoon so the champagne settles more gently on top of the crème de cassis. This creates a layered cocktail, stunning everyone with its presentation.

The amaretto sour

 As a part of the ‘sours’ family, the amaretto sour is a twist on the more common whiskey sour. Creamy yet refreshing, this is a far better fit for those with a sweeter tooth. Next time you’re at a cocktail bar and you can’t find this on the menu, ask the bartender to mix you one. And if you’re keen to try making one at home…

  

Recipe:

60 ml Disaronno

The juice of half a lemon

1 small egg white

A dash of Agnostura Aromatic bitters

(a dash of vanilla gomme syrup, optional for added sweetness)

Method:

Chill a tumbler/old fashioned glass while you prepare your ingredients. Shake your egg white on its own to emulsify it before adding the rest of the ingredients (except bitters). The rest of the ingredients should be shaken with ice before being poured over into your chilled glass. Add the dash of bitters to complete and garnish with a slice of lemon.

The Tom Collins

A classic gin-based cocktail with a citrus edge. Simple and slightly bitter, the Tom Collins is built tall into the glass to quench your thirst as well as refresh. Although likely to be of British provenance, the cocktail’s origin has been fought over. Nonetheless, the Tom Collins has been a hit since the 19th century. We recommend all gin lovers to give this one a try at home. 

  

Recipe:

50ml gin (we recommend Sipsmiths London Dry)

Juice of half a lemon

Soda Water

A dash of gomme syrup

Method:

Fill a high ball glass with ice and pour over the gin. Follow with the other ingredients and stir.

Award-winning floral artist, designer, teacher (Zita set up her own academy in 2010 which is now one of the leading flower schools in the world) and creator of the Living Embroidery Bridal Collection, Zita Elze studied artistic bookbinding in Paris, followed by Interior Design at London's KLC School of Design and Garden Design at the Inchbald School of Design, where she graduated with a distinction. She won the prestigious Design and Decoration Award 'Graduate Garden Designer of the Year 2003′ and opened her eponymously named first shop in Kew in the same year. In 2009, Zita won a silver-gilt medal for her first major exhibit, entitled A Celebration of Life, at the Chelsea Flower Show, where she revealed her ground-breaking floral embroidery technique.

 

We caught up with her to get some insight into her design process and what advice she would give to those planning their wedding.

 

GB: Do you follow trends? Where do these trends come from?

ZE: I tend not to follow any trends and prefer to work with a client’s brief, taking their personal taste into consideration as well as the location.

GB: Are there specific seasonal trends, for S/S or A/W?

ZE: For me only those which are dictated by the availability of flowers and foliage at specific times of year.

 

GB: Is there anything in particular that you avoid when working on a wedding?

ZE: I try to avoid spending the budget on random small items here and there. I encourage my brides to focus on big statements instead – the use of trees, impressive arrangements or a floral wall, for instance.

 

GB: What has been your favourite arrangement to make? Bridal bouquet, bridesmaids bouquets, centre pieces?

ZE: I especially love creating brides’ bouquets.

 

GB: What advice would you give a Bride / Mother of the Bride / Mother of the Groom arranging a wedding?

ZE: Bride: follow your heart. Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom: let your daughter and her groom make the decisions, it’s their wedding!

 

GB: Do you get to see the dress? Do you use the dress for inspiration?

ZE: Yes, I always ask to see images of the dress. It is helpful for the overall design and especially in terms of getting the style of the bouquet right.

 

GB: Where would you recommend brides look for inspiration, your favourite mags/blogs/Pinterest accounts?

ZE: I suggest that they prepare a personal mood board from a variety of sources – Pinterest is used by a lot of brides for this purpose. The mood board should include ideas and impressions of things that they like. With this a good designer can easily interpret and create their own concepts rather than copying someone else’s floral designs.  

 

GB: Who would be your all-time favourite celebrity to arrange wedding flowers for and why?

ZE: Christian Lacroix – I’m currently enjoying injecting a bit of drama into my designs, so he would be ideal!

The coastal break: South Devon

Nearly 20 years after the real ladies from Yorkshire clubbed together to shoot the calendar, Tim Firth’s adaptation for the stage is heartwarming, poignant, but hilariously funny.

For all those adventure seekers we have the recommendation for you: climbing the peninsula where San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (hard to pronounce, but comes to mean "castle rock"). Located off the Bay of Biscay, the trek involves crossing a stone bridge and 241 steps. According to legend, after you have completed the climb, you should ring the bell of the church three times and make a wish. Picturesque is an understatement, we'll definitely be soaking up the views and sea air! 

 

The Fine Art Museum of Alava

The Museum of Fine Arts in Alava contains extensive collections from the 18th and 19th centuries by Spanish artists as well as being a prime holder of Basque art from the period spanning 1850 to 1950. Besides the art, this is a definite gem for lovers of ornate architecture. The building itself is surrounded by a beautiful garden making it worth a visit for those who love exploring.

 

The Casino Building

Originally a social and gambling venue for the elite, this building located in the Lamera park is steeped in an interesting history. Despite being restored after flooding, the Casino building still maintains it majestic nature, boasting art and architecture in its numerous rooms and salons. This is definitely somewhere to dive into on those unbearably hot afternoons whilst enjoying a drink at the terrace bar which overlooks some gorgeous scenery. 

 

The Rioja Wine Region

Spain is known for its wine, however Rioja is considered the holy grail by some. The Basque country is home to one of the Rioja regions, Rioja Alavesa and has potential for wine tours visiting the host of wineries which call the Basque country their home.  

 

Casco Viejo - Old Town

The Casco Viejo of Bilbao is the heart of Bilbao. The place is fully of quirky independent shops, charming streets which are mostly pedestrianised, and tapas bars. Every now and again you'll reach a stunning spot like the St. James Cathedral and the Plaza Nueva. It is known as one of the most colourful neighbourhood. 

 

Marqués de Riscal

At this stylish and quirky looking hotel in Elciego you can enjoy an exclusive room with view straight onto the valley and the surrounding vineyards. One of our favourite events of the year. Yesterday was Ladies Day with prosecco, fascinators and dangerously tall shoes abound.

Being one of the most photographed social events of the year, dressing to impress is mandatory. World class sport practically forms the background to one of the most stylish race meetings in Britain, and it’s not surprising that King Edward VII famously described the event as “a garden party with racing tacked on”.

Against the backdrop of the Sussex Downs and the Solent, the surroundings become the canvas to display some of the Summer’s brightest and most daring outfits. Here are some of our favourites from yesterday:

We've got on board with this recent addition to the City of London financial district, a garden complex 35 floors up London's Walkie Talkie (otherwise known as 20 Fenchurch Street). The place is home to a total of three garden terraces, each with a unique theme, with restaurants and bars (NB entry is free, but be sure to book in advance!).

Kyoto Garden

 

If you're not keen on heights and prefer a more traditional sort of garden (on the ground!) the Kyoto garden is one of London's best kept secret havens. You'll find this little gem in Holland Park where the only sounds in your midst will be the birdcall and the gushing from the streams.

]]> Thu, 07 Jul 2016 13:00:22 +0000 <![CDATA[The GB Travel Tick List: Pink Lakes]]> https://ginabacconi.com/news/pink-lakes/ Pink lakes are a rare and beautiful natural wonder. There are only a few known on the planet, and they occur around the world withno particular geographic pattern.

The amazing pink colour of Lake Retba in Senegal is due to a rare algae called Dunaliella salina - although that may sound potentially dangerous, the algae causes no harm to human skin. The lake’s water is extremely salty, up to 40%, and with a similar salt content to the Dead Sea, that allows people to float on its surface.

Lake Hillier is another pink lake, part of the Recherche Archipelago in Western Australia. The mesmerizing pink is visible all year around and its cause is a scientific mystery yet to be cracked. Most likely it is due to the same rare algae or another bacteria. Either way its beauty cannot be denied.

God's Own County - A garden for Yorkshire

As well as being our favourite, this garden won the People’s Choice Best Show Garden award. This garden was inspired by the medieval great window at York minster. We love the hues of oranges and purples used throughout the display, the perfect inspiration for dresses this summer.

From summer weddings to Wimbledon, race days to regattas, for family gatherings, parties and special occasions, you’ll find the perfect Gina Bacconi dress for every event.

The right dress for the right occasion is sometimes all you need. But what if the occasion brings certain expectations with it? For example, some race meetings have different dress codes dependent on the day, or even the Enclosure.

ROYAL ASCOT

Race Day – suiting the formality of Royal Ascot (June 14th-16th) we have a great selection of formal daywear. Watching the races from the Royal Enclosure? Dresses and skirts should be of “modest length, hats should be worn, dresses should have straps of one inch or greater”. The Queen Anne enclosure asks ladies to wear “a hat, head piece or fascinator, and sheer strap dresses or tops are not permitted”. In the Windsor enclosure, racegoers need smart clothes but no formal dress code applies here.

 

As Royal Ascot is in high summer, we would recommend wearing something a little lighter. For the Royal Enclosure, this is your chance to really dress up. Our beautiful cookies and cream Bouquet guipure dress will be sure to make heads turn.

  

For the Queen Anne Enclosure we would recommend our chiffon over crepe dress with a pretty beaded edge, which really has the wow factor, the layered chiffon cape give just the right amount of arm coverage. Team with our navy and chalk cinamay swirl fascinator.

  

And for the Windsor Enclosure, we recommend a pop of colour with our bias cut chiffon dress with the pretty guipure over top, teamed with a contrasting clutch and heels for the perfect day-into-evening look.

   

LADIES DAY

Ladies’ Day at Epsom (Friday June 3rd) has a smart casual dress code – in other words, another great excuse to dress up. We suggest wearing something like our printed scuba dress. A perfect summer dress with an abstract floral print, this frock is sure to be a high stakes winner. Or how about adding some glitz with our spotty chiffon dress with a beaded neckline and waist? This highly elegant dress offers a high-fashion note to your look.

  

EBOR FESTIVAL

 

In York, the Ebor Festival in August will be a chance to show off your finest attire. A perfect choice would be our hot pink long pleated chiffon dress – a great summer investment. This dress can be accessorized with a simple long pendent necklaces and some metallic sandals. Or if you are looking for something ultra-sophisticated, our navy soft ponti dress with beaded mesh neckline – the piped seams are totally slimming.

   

GOODWOOD

Dressing for Glorious Goodwood is all about informal elegance: after all, King Edward VII said it was a garden party with racing tacked on! We have the ideal monochrome spot and floral jersey dress. This dress is flattering for all shapes and sizes, featuring a v-neck wrap bodice, and will really WOW at the starting line. Or to celebrate the fashionable outing, why not add a splash of pink with our floral stretch cotton godet dress. This dress features a flirty kick out hem for a feminine look.

 

WIMBLEDON

Summer isn’t all about the races, though. If you find yourself on Murray Mount, it’s casualwear all the way, but if you’re lucky enough to be sitting on Centre Court, look for an outfit that suits the occasion like strawberries and cream!

Why not turn heads in our twin printed chiffon and satin dress? Great for those hot summer days, but also in the unpredictable summer showers. Or how about our jacquard and crepe jacket and dress, with some contrasting accessories – this elegant outfit is the perfect summer item piece.

  

HENLEY

For Henley (starts 29th June) you’ll need a beautiful dress, together with matching hat. We have just the combinations to show off at the Royal Regatta.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we think now is the perfect time to begin our search for the Mother of the Bride 2016. How has your mum made your special day even more magical? Whether you’re a bride-to-be, groom-to-be or recently married, we’d love to hear your story. The most deserving mum will be treated to a fabulous styling day at our London showroom, including a choice of outfit from our SS16 collection and a gift bag full of lovely things.

How to enter
Nominating your mum is easy – the first step is to go to our online entry form.

Upload a picture of your mum, tell us her name and share your story about why she deserves to be crowned Mother of the Bride 2016. Once you’ve entered, you can cast your vote. The winner will be the mum with the most votes so share your entry with friends and family and ask them to vote too.

Mother’s Day is the day to celebrate your Mum and everything she does. For a mother of the bride or groom, the special day is all about the child, and the family as a whole. But on 6th March this year, mums around the country get their day in the sun (hopefully!). Mums will be treated and spoiled up and down the country – with everything from spa days and pamper days to meals out and shopping trips. However, our favourite option is to treat your mum to Afternoon Tea.

After moving from Poland to England, Sara and Jack opened for business in 1913 under the trading name J.Offenbach. So how did J.Offenbach evolve into the chic, go-to eveningwear label for women, Gina Bacconi?

Before Jack and Sara made the move to England, they knew nothing of the fashion business. However, after a discussion with a friend who was a machinist, they lost no time in setting up J.Offenbach. Their first line was a collection of ladies’ coats, whose high style ensured they sold very well. Despite two World Wars and the Great Depression, the business flourished and welcomed Jack and Sara’s three sons as designers and manufacturers after World War II.

J.Offenbach became Shubette of London, whose designers created Gina Bacconi, a high quality premium brand now approaching a special birthday…

And now in the hands of the third and fourth generations of the Offenbach family, Shubette is a renowned design, manufacturing, wholesale and online retail group of high quality ladieswear.
