GB Travel Tick-list: UK getaways

GB Travel Tick-list: UK getaways

With the summer holiday season just around the corner, it’s time to think about those all-important holiday plans. We’ve been intrigued by what the UK has to offer, from the tranquil country getaway to the cultural city break. In this season’s Gina Bacconi’s travel tick-list, we’ve lined up a range of destinations for a weekend away.

The Traditional retreat: The Talbot Inn

A traditional countryside haven, this stylish coaching inn offers the best in B&B and rooms full of character. Also open every day are the bar, snug, courtyard and map rooms serving classic pub food and drink all day.

Based in the historic village of Mells and 20 minutes from Bath, the Talbot Inn is perfectly situated for a quiet retreat. It’s easily accessible and only a 2-hour train ride from London.

The country getaway: Cotswolds camping at Holycombe

One for lovers of that quintessential British pastime, camping. This picturesque site finds itself in the flora- and fauna-rich grounds of a Norman castle, and borders many beautiful Cotswolds towns and villages.

The campsite hosts those who bring their own tents; however, we were more tempted by the luxurious-looking yurt structures which are furnished with Moroccan rugs, sheepskins and embroidered wall hangings. The more adventurous among you might be interested in the treehouse.

The coastal break: South Devon

When it comes to the best of the British seaside, Devon is right up there. We definitely recommend a weekend away to hit the beach, sample some of the UK’s finest and freshest seafood, and squeeze in an indulgent afternoon cream tea.

Unsurprisingly, summer is a busy time so, to find a place to stay, make sure you book well in advance – stylish hotels (http://www.southsands.com/), numerous B&Bs or cosy Devon cottages make for a wonderful experience and stunning views all round.

The spa retreat: Nivarna Spa

If there’s something the UK knows how to do well, it’s how to offer the best TLC around, and a weekend for complete relaxation and pampering sounds perfect to us. The beauty of this kind of getaway is that it’s possible to spend anything from an afternoon to a whole week away.

We particularly like the look of Nirvana spa (https://nirvanaspa.co.uk/), a day retreat offering a host of treatments, and fitness classes for more active visitors. We’ve heard that this place is a real oasis (…one that involves a delicious afternoon tea, of course!).

The city break: Edinburgh

For the more culture-seeking and curious amongst us, a weekend exploring Edinburgh is definitely on the list.

With a gorgeous city to explore, you could hardly hope to do everything and cover every one of the vibrant streets. But to mix things up a little, it’s more than possible to fit in a visit to Edinburgh castle or the Royal Botanic Gardens over a weekend. Or, for the more energetic, a climb up to Arthur’s Seat!
