Your questions answered: dressing with confidence over 50
Style advice · From our postbag
Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to hear from thousands of Gina Bacconi customers — many of whom write to us not just about their purchases, but about the occasions they’re dressing for. We’ve gathered the questions that come up again and again, and answered them as honestly and helpfully as we can.
Patricia M., Cheshire
“I have a formal occasion coming up and I don’t know where to start. What should a woman over 50 actually wear?”
Our answer
The most important thing we can say is this: you have the confidence and elegance to wear whatever makes you feel wonderful — and formal occasions are the perfect opportunity to embrace that.
In practical terms, look for well-structured fabrics like crepe, jacquard, or lace that hold their shape and drape beautifully. A midi or maxi length is both flattering and sophisticated. The goal is an outfit that feels luxurious rather than fussy — effortful in its quality, effortless in how it sits.
Susan H., Surrey
“What colours actually work for women over 50? I feel like I always get it wrong.”
Our answer
There are no rules — but certain colours tend to photograph particularly well and complement mature skin tones beautifully. Rich jewel tones such as sapphire, emerald, burgundy, and amethyst are always elegant. Soft neutrals like champagne, blush, and stone are timeless. Navy is endlessly versatile.
The key is choosing a shade that lights up your face rather than drains it. Our simplest advice: hold the fabric near your face in natural light before you commit. The right colour will make you look immediately more rested and radiant. Trust that instinct.
Janet W., Edinburgh
“Which silhouettes are most flattering? I’ve lost confidence in knowing what suits me.”
Our answer
Styles that skim rather than cling tend to be the most flattering and the most comfortable for all-day wear. A-line and fit-and-flare skirts balance proportions beautifully. Wrap styles are universally flattering and easy to wear. Midi lengths are elegant and practical.
Empire waists or relaxed waistbands offer comfort without sacrificing style. Our designs at Gina Bacconi are shaped with a real woman in mind — not a clothes hanger. When something fits properly and moves with you, your confidence does the rest.
Caroline R., Bath
“Should women over 50 avoid sleeveless dresses? I’ve been told I should cover up.”
Our answer
Not at all. If you love a sleeveless style, wear it. Many women do prefer the option of coverage — particularly for church ceremonies or daytime events — but that’s a personal choice, not a rule.
If you’d like to cover up, a tailored jacket, an embellished bolero, or a lightweight wrap are all beautiful options. Many Gina Bacconi styles come with a jacket or cover-up included, so you have the choice without ever compromising the look.
Margaret F., Yorkshire
“What fabrics should I be looking for? I want something that travels well and doesn’t crease.”
Our answer
Fabric makes an enormous difference to how an outfit looks and feels — particularly when worn all day or travelling to a venue. Crepe is the undisputed champion for travel: it drapes beautifully, holds its shape, and barely creases. Chiffon and georgette are light and floaty, ideal for summer events. Lace adds texture and occasion without effort.
For a smooth, polished finish, always look for a lined dress. Lining improves how a garment hangs, reduces static, and gives a far more refined result than unlined alternatives.
Diana L., Berkshire
“My daughter is getting married. How do I dress elegantly without outshining her or getting it wrong?”
Our answer
Elegance at any age comes from fit, fabric, and confidence — and women over 50 tend to have all three in abundance. Choose a dress or suit in a quality fabric, ensure the fit is right (a small alteration can transform a good outfit into a great one), and keep accessories considered rather than overdone.
As for outshining the bride — that’s not something a well-chosen Mother of the Bride outfit does. Your role is to look radiant for her day, and when you feel good in what you’re wearing, that warmth shows. Trust your instincts. If you feel wonderful in it, you’ll look wonderful in it.
Anne K., Hampshire
“Is it acceptable to wear black to a wedding? I feel most confident in black but worry it’s inappropriate.”
Our answer
Black is increasingly acceptable at weddings — particularly for evening receptions, city weddings, or events with a formal dress code. If you feel most yourself in black, don’t abandon it entirely.
The key is to make it feel celebratory. Choose a beautiful fabric, add embellished jewellery, or opt for a style with a striking detail that reads as occasion wear. A well-chosen black dress is rarely the wrong answer.
Rosemary B., Gloucestershire
“How do I look polished and put-together without feeling overdressed?”
Our answer
The key is dressing to the occasion rather than for it. Read the venue, the time of day, and the dress code carefully. A smart midi dress with heels is appropriate for almost any daytime occasion. For evening events, you can go more embellished or formal.
When in doubt, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed — but the real secret is wearing something you feel comfortable and confident in. When you’re at ease, it always looks effortless.
Vivienne T., Dorset
“What shoes work best for long occasions? I need to be comfortable but still look elegant.”
Our answer
Comfort matters as much as style — particularly for events where you’ll be on your feet for hours. A block heel or kitten heel offers elegance without strain and is far more wearable across a full day than a stiletto. Embellished flats or smart mules are a genuinely stylish alternative.
Do think about the venue: stilettos on grass or cobblestones are a particular hazard. The most important thing is that you can enjoy the day without thinking about your feet — because when you’re comfortable, you carry yourself entirely differently.
Frances N., Wiltshire
“Can I still wear prints and patterns at my age? Everyone seems to wear block colours.”
Our answer
Absolutely — and please do. Prints can be joyful, striking, and incredibly flattering. Florals are perennially popular for weddings and summer events. Abstract or geometric prints can look modern and sophisticated.
Choose a print in colours that suit you, and consider the scale: larger prints tend to suit taller figures, while smaller prints work well on petite frames. A beautiful print can do a lot of the work for you — it gives an outfit personality and often means you need fewer accessories to complete the look.
