The GB Travel Tick List: Pink Lakes

Pink lakes are a rare and beautiful natural wonder. There are only a few known on the planet, and they occur around the world withno particular geographic pattern.

The amazing pink colour of Lake Retba in Senegal is due to a rare algae called Dunaliella salina - although that may sound potentially dangerous, the algae causes no harm to human skin. The lake’s water is extremely salty, up to 40%, and with a similar salt content to the Dead Sea, that allows people to float on its surface.

Lake Hillier is another pink lake, part of the Recherche Archipelago in Western Australia. The mesmerizing pink is visible all year around and its cause is a scientific mystery yet to be cracked. Most likely it is due to the same rare algae or another bacteria. Either way its beauty cannot be denied.
